Another Potential Graham Challenger

According the goupstate.com, the online identity of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, South Carolina Lt. Governor, Andre Bauer is now considering challenging Senator Lindsey Graham.  Bauer could also challenge Republican Congressman Bob Inglis.

I’m still happy doing what I’m doing,” Bauer said. “For a while now, I’ve had people approach me, and I’ve kind of brushed it off. But any time you have that many activists in the party approach you, you would have to at least think about it.

Like many South Carolinians, Bauer considers the immigration reform bill Graham sponsored in the Senate to be amnesty.  At a La Raza Rally Graham called those who opposed the bill bigots.

Whether Bauer will actually challenge Graham is anyone’s guess at this point.  Bauer said, “never say never” but added, “I’m not ordering bumper stickers right now.”  Still, that Bauer would even consider the possibility says something about the trouble Graham is in.

For his part, Graham continues to claim confidence and pundits focus on the $4 million war chest Graham has on hand.  indeed, Graham will be a formidable opponent for anyone who seriously challenges him.  But make no mistake, Graham is very unpopular among a large percentage of South Carolina’s conservative Republicans.  There is a growing groundswell of support for a serious challenger to take Graham on in the primary.  Whether that challenger will emerge is uncertain but what is certain is that should that serious challenger appear, he or she will have a large base of support right off.

Another Possible Graham Challenger or Two!

Reader True Conservative tipped me off that Republican state representative Jeff Duncan is considering running against Lindsey Graham in the Republican primary.  I should have caught this already considering the site True Conservative sent me to is in the blogroll.  The blog toastgraham.com has the notice with a link to politico.com where the story is.  From Politico.com:

Duncan said that Graham?s strong support of last month?s failed comprehensive immigration reform bill prompted many conservatives in South Carolina to encourage him to run.

Duncan’s hesitation is based on the “was the immense amount of money he would have to raise in a statewide campaign.”  As Graham has said repeatedly, he’s got a big war chest and any challenger will have an uphill battle to raise even a fraction of the money Graham has on hand.

Toastgraham.com also points to a Post and Courier article indicating that US Representative Tommy Hartnett is considering a Graham challenge as well.  From the P&C article Hartnett said:

I’m keeping the track shoes unlaced so I can slip my feet into them quick if I need to,” said Hartnett, 65. “I would hate to see him get a free ride.

Two others say they are in the race, “John Cina, a retired Air Force veteran from Summerville, and Gary McLeod, a perennial candidate for the 6th Congressional District.”

All of these challengers face an uphill battle but I believe that if one of them can rise to the top, Graham can be defeated.  He may have a lot of money but his support among South Carolina conservatives is pretty much exhausted.  Graham should, and well may, face the toughest battle of his life.

I don’t know about you but I’m excited.  Graham has challengers and with all the bravado of the Graham campaign, he has to be sweating at least a little.  Graham knows full well that his constituents are not happy with him.  Look for a turn to the right as Graham faces the consequences of his actions.  When that turn comes conservatives should be be fooled.  Graham is still a self serving opportunist.  Don’t forget that.

Graham Has a Challenger

Finally, Lindsey Graham has a challenger.  I had a comment on the blog a few days ago from that challenger.  Here’s the comment.

I would love to have your assistance. I am running against Lindsey Graham. Lindsey believes he can walk away with the election because of his great storehouse of money and his power in the state. With your help we could see him defeated. I need the help of citizens like yourself who see the need for change and will help spread the word.

Thank you for your consideration. Please visit my website, http://www.carnesforsenate.com and contact me. I would like the opportunity to speak with you in person.

Tim Carnes

So Tim Carnes of Greenville, SC is in the race!  I encourage everyone reading this blog to to go Carnes’ campaign website and read about him.  At this point I am not aware of any other challengers or even potential challengers.  That means right now I am supporting Tim Carnes for US Senate.

If anyone knows of another challenger or potential challenger, please let me know.
